Originally comprised of 75 Chicago Community Areas, the annexation of the land for O'Hare International Airport required a 76th Community Area, O'Hare Community Area, to be added in 1960; and socio-economic conditions called for the splitting of Uptown Community Area in 1980 giving rise to Edgewater Community Area to the North.
