Chicago Neighborhoods represent over two centuries of immigration and American ingenuity. The City of Chicago recognizes over 200 individual neighborhoods that are as diverse and colorful as their residents. From the Far East to Italy, Chicago's neighborhoods reflect a worldly culture adopted from, and adapted to, a consistent immigrant influence, as strong today as ever. This eclecticism embodies the "Melting Pot" philosophy and is prevalent across the city. In preparation for the 1930 census, Chicago Community Areas were created to statistically measure and historically document the economy of the city. The difference between the two, "neighborhoods" and "Community Areas," is that neighborhoods are more reflective of a quality of life and culture, whereas Community Areas focus on economic factors, such as education and employment, housing trends and prices, and other demographic aspects of an area. Our "Community Areas" section has select real estate statistics such as median home price and number of housing units, as well as maps, Alderman and Ward information, Zip Code coverage, and neighborhoods within each community area.
