| "Founded in 1939 by Joseph B. Meegan, Saul Alinksky, and supporting clergy, business owners, union officials, and residents, the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council (BYNC) is America’s oldest not-for-profit community-based organization. As chronicled in Upton Sinclair’s now famous book The Jungle, the twelve square-mile area located on Chicago’s southwest side, commonly known as "Back of the Yards," suffered from social disorganization, poor housing, and juvenile delinquency. BYNC was created in response to these growing social issues and continues today to organize residents and bring essential social services and economic resources to the community." |
