The Fernwood Neighborhood is a far South-Side Chicago neighborhood. At one time, Fernwood was known as the "Monaco of Chicago;" all other surrounding villages had annexed to Chicago in 1889 while Fernwood residents held back leaving the Fernwood Village as an independent community inside the City of Chicago.
