This historically Irish neighborhood on the south side is now a well established middle class neighborhood with a strong community identity. The neighborhood is named for Mount Greenwood cemetery, which, along with the other cemeteries and parks in the area, give this neighborhood a quiet feel with a little more green than many city neighborhoods. There are a number of high-quality schools, largely parochial, including Keller Elementary Gifted Magnet School, Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School, and St. Xavier University. Adding to the academic atmosphere are the Mount Greenwood Historical Society and the Mount Greenwood branch of the Chicago Public Library, which offers book discussions for adults and story time for kids.
