Within walking distance from the lakefront, Navy Pier and the Magnificent Mile, Streeterville is definitely the epitome of city living. Most apartment buildings feature luxury homes with doorman guarded front steps and a slew of upscale amenities. Constantly being redeveloped, Streeterville boasts neighborhood landmarks such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Shops at North Bridge, Fox & Obel and Northwestern Hospital. With studios starting in the $160,000, Streeterville is a tourist area for many and home for the lucky.
The history of Streeterville is interesting in itself. 'Ma' and 'Cap' Streeter's boat ran aground on a sandbar that was some 400 feet off Chicago's original shoreline in the 1880's. Content with this situation, they decided to simply live on the boat and built a breakwater to protect their 'home.' Cap's entrepreneurial spirit sensed there was money to be made and he encouraged landfilling on his property, substantially underbidding other dumps' fees and eventually creating some of Chicago's most prized real estate. Before officially becoming part of Chicago, Cap had claimed the independent territory as the District of Lake Michigan under his homesteading rights as a Civil War Veteran and in respect to an 1821 federal survey that declared that both, Chicago and Illinois, ended at the shoreline.
