The Robert Taylor Homes Neighborhood was one of the many housing projects that Chicago attempted to implement in the early 1960's. Like so many other low-income housing projects, The Robert Taylor Homes fell into blight as the area became overrun by drugs and violence. In March of 2007, the last of the buildings that comprised The Robert Taylor Homes was demolished.
Heading toward redevelopment, the neighborhood is slated to benefit from the HOPE VI plan, a Department of Housing and Urban Development plan "meant to revitalize the absolute worst public housing projects" and is destined to be renamed "Legends South." Housing is estimated to be approximately 2,300 low-rise residential apartments and homes and will be mixed-income. Redevelopment plans also include at least seven new or renovated community facilities and, the earmark of gentrification, several retail and commercial spaces are planned to be included in the project.
